Journal Prompts for Self-Love

What do you think of when you hear self-love?

Is it a girl in a foamy bubble bath, with a glass of champagne, with her hair in a messy top bun, one foot out of the water, with toe dividers in, painting her toe nails? maybe someone laying on a 2,000 thread count-duvet-covered-bed, in the plushest of bath robes, with an avocado face mask on and cucumber slices over the eyes?

Those 2 images are how I pictured self-love when I was a kid.

Now that I’m a little older and hopefully a bit wiser, I see that self-love has very little to do with expensive face masks & fancy spa days. Self-love is a series of habits. It's the way you talk to yourself. How you view yourself. The decisions and investments that you make in yourself.

I definitely can’t say that I’ve mastered self-love, but I can say that the following journal prompts have propelled me on the journey. Grab a piece of paper and a pen; or, if you prefer, open a voice memo on your phone and talk these answers out loud.

  1. Where do I feel guilt, shame, or disappointment in my life?

  2. For each instance, answer this: what have I learned from this experience?

  3. What can I make peace with in my life?

  4. When I think of ‘self-love,’ what words, colors, shapes, symbols, and things come to mind?

  5. What are 15 things that I am good at? List all 15

  6. What are 5 things that I am great at?

  7. What is 1 thing that comes very naturally to me?

  8. Of the 10 people I interact with the most, how many of them have something in their life that inspires me?

  9. When was the last time I really had fun?

  10. When I close my eyes and picture my highest self, what do they look like? how do they carry themselves? how do they fill their days? Try to connect with this highest self daily.
